The SpaceChase plugin for Grasshopper focuses on initiating dynamic capabilities to Space Syntax theory by introducing the “Dynamic Canvas” model along with real-time editing capabilities in an interactive physics-based environment.
SpaceChase is a software development project, being developed for “Mekan Dizimi Tasarım Uygulaması” (no:119M082) under ARDEB 1001 programme of TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). “Mekan Dizimi Tasarım Uygulaması” is a collaborative research project between Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul Bilgi University and Tuspa Design Studio.
Space Syntax as a software tool and thinking, intends to understand and analyze the existing spatial constructions. Our research intends to investigate the use of the graph based thinking in the architectural design process through generating topological and geometric layout possibilities. The purpose of this research is investigating the potential use of the conceptual framework in Space Syntax as a creative tool that generates real-time information in the architectural design process.
In this regard, a Kangaroo-based dynamic graph is introduced along with contextual node and edge types. The dynamic graph can be manipulated through node and link manager GUIs, coupling Space Syntax metrics with node behaviour and various other options for adjusting the physical properties of the dynamic nodes and edges.
Graph measurements and analyses such as: Justified Tree Graph, Mean Depth, Relative Asymmetry, Real Relative Asymmetry, Integration, Control, Connectivity and Choice are present in the current version. Most of the internal properties of the nodes can be accessed through analysis components for further calculations. Additionally, an implementation of Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm is available to be used with constructed graphs.
Please read the "Readme.txt" for instructions on installing, basic examples are included within the archive.
Currently, the plugin is a GHPY assembly, written in Python. Future versions may be written from scratch in C# to provide support for Mac and for various other advantages.
