Komorebi is a Japanese word describing the dappled light permeating through the leaves of the trees in a forest. This natural phenomenon is a strong example of 1/f signal and flicker noise occurring in nature and is the main goal that we try to achieve when designing structures seeking naturalness in light control.
The ghKomorebi tool was developed in Jun Sato Lab at the University of Tokyo. Robust image and digital signal processing libraries were integrated into the plugin to solve the mathematical problems of the Fourier transform and the utilities of image processing. The Exocortex.DSP library is used as a standard way to solve FFT in one, two and three dimensions. ImageMagick library is integrated with various image processing utilities.
ghKomorebi plugin is a work-in-progress, but the initial set of components developed specifically for the purpose of façade design optimisation by PSA can be designated into 4 main categories – RT image capture, 2D- and 3D-FFT, PSA (Euclidean distance and AAPSD calculators), Image processing utilities (such as resize, recolour etc.).
