We present Bower, a plugin for Grasshopper currently in initial development that is aimed at helping designers make better buildings for living, through the provision of quality-related information derived about apartment spatial design. In the way that the Bowerbird collects a wide range of material to build its elaborate dwellings, Bower contains multiple tools that can be combined to create a refined understanding of an apartment layout. The aim of the plugin is to facilitate the assessment of design alternatives in a manner that is holistic in nature to incorporate harder quantifiable metrics, with softer qualitative considerations.
The development of Bower is underpinned by a mission to assist designers to have a holistic understanding of the myriad of factors that influence spatial design. To this end, a number of different spatial analysis methods have been utilised in order to deliver benchmarks across the spectrum that borrow from space syntax, solar analysis, and isovist computation, to name a few.
